Who would have won if Fischer and Karpov match took place?

Well, most likely Fischer would have won, but if Fischer would play against Kasparov, Kasparov would have won. Why? age factor, in 1975 Fischer were 32 Karpov were 24. So if Fischer would have played against Kasparov. lets say in 1984, Fischer would had 41, Kasparov would had 21, so I think its obvious what would be the score.
But Prime Karpov > Prime Fischer + Prime Kasparov. Is it true?
who cares? fischer made more headlines by not being somewhere, than anyone else would make actually showing up. the greta garbo of chess. he's basically tiger woods plus nicklaus and bobby jones and sam snead rolled into one. no one is even close. the guy was just a lightning rod...

At Lugano 1968 Olympiad Fischer showed up with team USA, but he protested the playing conditions: lighting, chess, sets, clocks, tables... As the organisers refused to meet his demands, he took a plane home and thus got no pay.

To answer the original question, we need to have a calibration point: Boris Spassky. Both Fischer and Karpov beat Spassky after losing the first game.
Fischer was of course an incredibly strong player but the mark of a great champion is not only winning the championship but defending it as well. Fischer never did that or even attempted too. I can’t prove this but I get the impression he was so emotionally fragile he couldn’t bear the thought of losing the championship so he never risked it.

We will never know who would have won between Fischer and Karpov, but I’ll say this about Karpov his tournament record is staggering…it pretty much speaks for itself. I think Kasparov and Karpov were pretty much equal in strength. If anything separated them maybe it was Kasparov’s work ethic. He would prepare for his matches like no one before him.

By the way I just picked up Timman’s new book about the Kasparov-Karpov championship matches…it is one great read.
@tpr et al........ i absolutely agree with bobby protesting playing conditions. yes, he was a little 'sensitive.' but back then, and to an extent even now, playing conditions sucked, and prize $ was ludicrous. when fischer protested for better pay or playing conditions - who benefited? all the players. everyone. if he hadn't held out for the world championship...what was the original prize money --- $10,000 or something???? and he held out for a couple hundred thousand? unheard of! he brought big money to chess....

yeah, he was a lunatic.............but he was actually pretty right, at times.

this captcha is so unfair....a smothered mate...........unfair..........
This is a variant of the "Who's the best player ever?" question.
Best as in most consecutive wins at the GM level? Fischer with 19.
Best as in best tournament record? Karpov at Linares 1994 with 11/13.
Best as in stayed at the top the longest? Kasparov with almost 20 years.

Of course Magnus would kick all their asses ;)
