Boy if this was the first game of the series, let's just say the rest of the series was gonna be a bloodbath. I tried all the tricks of the trade (except Bd2-Ba5-Bxd8 and other "super-cheapos", out of respect for playing a really high rated UltraBullet player), including an e3-e4-e5 push, but Manu didn't flinch. I went 2/22 (2 wins, 20 losses), but all I thought of after the series was over was the great opportunity I had to play speed chess online against a professional chess player.
UltraBullet is Not "not-chess"
It isn't "not-chess", but rather it is a variant that deserves respect, just like any other variant. A time control, I mean—not technically a variant. To quote the legendary penguingm1, a true GrandMaster of All Electronics Things, "People say this isn't chess, that isn't chess... they just say that because they're bad at it."
Hate if you want, but Bd7-Ba4-Bxd1: That's a Legendary Trick in UltraBullet (much less so in HyperBullet). It's risking a Bishop (3 points), for a chance to win a Queen for a Bishop (net 6 point gain). And, it works way more than 50% of the time. It's so effective that I even have to watch out for it myself. For instance, if my opponent has a Bishop on d2 and my c7-pawn has moved, then I am really on guard for my opponent potentially playing the trick on me. Plus, there is a huge psychological advantage if one is able to pull it off.
On a final note, this is considered an Opening blog. To add more depth to this blog post, I would also like to note the most common opening Bd7-Ba4-Bxd1 works against - the Colle System. Also, to note, d4 g6 Bh6 isn't too effective anymore... in the early days of online Bullet chess, it used to be, but it is so well-known now that it isn't worth the risk-reward.
