I already had a custom background before lichess implemented the third color theme, since I wrote a userstyle that injects one. Although my background doesn't work well with everything so transparent, so I ended up not using it even though it was really pretty and shiny.
I'm using this one: http://alpha.wallhaven.cc/wallpaper/176693
As i dont like the background to distract too much from the board, currently this one:

I like how that background looks with the board colours that are on the second row, I think its great that these custom backgrounds can breathe some life into board colours that otherwise wouldn't see a lot of usage.

^Wow that's a great combo Gnarly and awesomer.
So, I just put something nice and non-distracting.
For some reason using custom background images makes the color of twitch streams and international games relays white, instead of brown as it is for the usual themes.

More wallpapers like the default and #12 please!
The reason I really like it is because it doesn't have elements in the middle. Things that stand out at are the side, and stuff in the middle doesn't stand out too much. That's perfect for backgrounds IMO. Anyone got more of those?

I like http://wallpapers.wallhaven.cc/wallpapers/full/wallhaven-10236.jpg together with the "metal" board (4th row, 2nd column)
Unobtrusive and classy.
