More generally, pay attention to your opponent's threats or they can easily take tempos from you.

I guess study blunders, keep playing, analyse your games and move on from that loss
Try exchanging pieces when ahead in material. For example, 18..Bxf3 forces the exchange of Queens + an exchange of minor pieces. Then you can focus on your plan to queen the central pawns, not having to worry about getting mated.
