I got robbed $2000 in Spain During Elllobregat Chess Tournament 2022 - Story

I have a hard time believing that Sweden really has 10x the theft of Spain. Perhaps this data is collected from local police official statistics (how else are they measuring it?). If, as in this case, the Spanish police aren't even interested enough to file a report, then it wouldn't show up in this data, and that chart is worthless.
A wide national network of video cameras with a facial recognition system is a good way to counter street and other crime. Criminologists know that it works. If there is a record of the crime, it will be possible to find the perpetrator in the future. It's really possible. Although such a network is a controversial issue from the point of view of democracy and human rights.
I'm so sorry for what happened to you and your friend. its pretty strange that robbers are stealing from chess players and Indians
Isn't it common sense to never let go of your bags/possessions when you are travelling?
Especially, if you have valuables inside, hold on tightly to them at all times
Thieves target foreign visitors, most especially in big cities. Don't assume that the morals of ones own country will apply everywhere.
Hello

I am Chief arbiter of LORCA, a big event which takes places in las week of december all years.

Juan Jose Reina Fernandez one of the organisers of the tournament send regards to you and to all indian community and says that is very important not to make the complaint open to all spain tournaments or places.

I think the same and i understand that at least in Lorca Indian players all years were pleased to be there and never were problems about stole properties or similar. Mr Natarajan can confirm this, he always says that Lorca Chess Festival is one of the places which threats better indian chess players.

I am really sorry about your problem and about the problem in spain of robbery . we hope not repeat again.

a big hug and waiting your visit in Madrid Chess Academy.

International Arbiter.
Just by reading the title of the blogpost I knew it was Barcelona.
The city, though beautiful, is a shithole. When visiting it, one has to be 100% aware of their surrounding
so sorry to hear that!

yeah barcelona is famous for pickpockets, thieves and especially squatters. especially about squatters spain has - quite frankly - absurd medieval seeming laws, bcs they protect them more than the owner of the flat/house. that goes so far, that you'd have to pay for their water and electricity bills, otherwise they can sue you and what not.. but thats a different story. google it if interested.

many tourists get robbed in barcelona, especially in metro stations and crowded areas. be extremely cautious. maybe as cautious as in some dark corner in delhi at night as a tourist or so,...

in chess terms - when going into such a situation be well prepared with some defensive opening and strategy anticipating some surprise aggression from white..

bringing attention to this is the right thing to do!

wish you all the best!
Sad to hear, best to avoid Spain and other unsafe locations, especially if the organizers don't even care about it, IMO they are partly responsible for it if it happens at the official hotel!
