About me

Hi, I'm a self taught player who learned his ways by playing countless blitz games. I was very raw and needed to read some books to help understand the game better. I'm a Canadian International Master, in my 30s and love going on walks to the park. I play poker in my spare time so if that's of interest to you, we can chat anyways. I like decisive results so I encourage my students to always play for a win unless they're at a huge rating disadvantage so if that sounds like you, I'll be glad to have you on board!

Playing experience

I have been playing tournaments from 2005-2017 and recently started back up again. I have played players like Kamsky, Smirin, Moiseenko, Laznicka, Kaidanov and even roomed with a future 2700 in the World Juniors back in 2006. I have been very clutch when it counts such as getting my first IM norm in 2007 when I was 17 and winning on command in the 10th round. I managed to get my 3rd norm and achieve the IM title in 2011 and have hovered around 2400 since then. My best performance was in the 2013 DC International where I achieved a 2650 performance but did not get the GM norm due to playing too many players from one country, it still haunts me to this day.

Teaching experience

I have been teaching since 2007 when I taught a very young Alexandra Botez albeit not very well. It launched me into this teaching journey that I've really embraced recently teaching in schools, group classes and private one on ones. My best student ever is Razvan Preotu who is now a GM but at the time was about 2000-2100 and after 6 months with me he was 2300+. He of course is extremely talented so I can't take all the credit but I have taught some regional and provincial champions who still play today.

I also have a undergrad business degree from U of T so if there's anyone from there, I'd love to talk about the players there.

Other experiences

I do videos on youtube and stream on twitch, here's my twitch

Best skills

I like to play positionally at first but always ready to complicate things if the need arises. I tend to analyze very deeply in the openings and like teaching through lots of game analysis.

Teaching methodology

I prepare by going over recent top level or big tournament games to highlight an example of how good players think and play. I'm usually a few minutes early and I tend to go over time if we're in the middle of a game or analyzing a game very deep. I'm usually on lichess doing something so if you send me a message I'll definitely see it and I usually reply within 24 hours

I like going over my students games whether in blitz or otb to see which areas they need improving and depending on the student may incorporate study plans.
