Betting tournaments

I saw this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJdy-54WFvI about a tournament in which there'd be progressive betting, like poker. I'm actually a little sceptical to it, but I thought that it might be cool to play online, just for fun.

It works pretty much just like poker; you start with a small bet in a game and if you are feeling confident about your position, you can raise the bet more throughout the game. If the opponent doesn't want to give up, he'll have to call you, i.e. match your bet to keep playing.

First I thought that there maybe should be a new variant for this, since more psychology would be involved and it wouldn't be purely chess, so it shouldn't be mixed with the normal ratings.

But maybe a new type of tournament would be more fitting? The idea would be:

You start off with 15 points. The bet is defaulted to one point per game, but you can raise it throughout the game.

If you hit zero, you'll get to play other players who also hit zero for a game of two points.

You shouldn't be able to raise towards the end of the game, since it could be used to flag your opponent.

Maybe there'll have to be a limit to how many times you can raise, so you can't use it to waste your opponent's time.

Some differences between this kind of tournament and ordinary ones is that you could make your opponent not play a lost position, by raising the bet.

I'm still not entirely convinced it'd be fun to play, but I'll post it anywhere and see if anyone else likes it.
This actually sounds pretty fun! I’m a poker player… I would love to see this implemented!
Yeah this sounds really cool. Betting would have to be limited to the middlegame I think, because a stronger player could just keep raising at the start and force out a weaker player. Great concept though.
i like the idea but the higher rated player has every kind of edge.
whoever played on chesscube knows how the warzone tournaments went - the higher rated players would immediately increase stakes at the beginning of the game and most lower rated players wouldn't take it. forcing the players to play a few moves first doesn't really help.
