Tournament System Improvement

An option for extreme players: Mega-Berserk. It could be taken only before the start of the tournament.
Mega-Berserk players have to play all games in the tournament half-timed, but at the end they will get a reward: +10% to their points.
Crazy ideas keep invading into my head.

A Puzzle Battle.

All players solve same puzzle at same time.

A timer is countdown, 2 min. for each round. (Tournament creator define time, and number of rounds before start)

1st one who solved get 20 points,
second - 15 points,
3rd - 10 points,
4th - 9 points,
.......
.....
12th - 1 point.

All players that failed puzzle, or were to slow - 0 points.

After the end of the round - 30 seconds is given for players just to look for correct answer, and then new round begins.

Berserker rule still applies: player get half-time and extra point if he solve correct.

System must try to choose puzzles that are new for most players, according to their previous statistics, just to be fair.

I support suggestions made by Insane_Knight in #1
There really must be more variety of tournaments.

#3 trying to oppose, but Hellball, you do not have really strong arguments here:

1. You say, that it was intentional decision to unfavour berserkers. But isn't it better to give the tournament creator a freedom of choice, what type of tournament he would like to create - a berserker-friendly tournament (big reward for berserkering) or a usual one. This could be as an option before creation.

2. Long tournaments. "Verrrry wild idea." Why? Any problems to implement? Not interesting to play? Explain yourself.
I found it very interesting to play in this format. As well as to spectate - for example: top 10 classic players decide to play each other - I'll be watching their games, standings, etc.

3. Correspondence tournaments, for sure, must be. You say it is almost impossible to moderate for cheaters? Hard to believe. What is the reason? Not enough servers? Well, for sure, this issue could be solved.
Also you think, that many people will start it and will not finish. Yes, there probably will be such circumstances. But if the number of players in the tournament is high (say 30+) it will not affect tournament at all.
As an additional option - only 1 years old accounts with 1000+ games played could be allowed to correspondence tournaments, to solve both problems of cheating and incompletion.

4. Multi-variant tournaments. There are players, that are experts in all variants. So,why not?
I see 3 ways of playing it:
a) Random variant selection before each game.
b) Player plays all variants, one after other.
c) Player picks a variant before a game, after he see his opponent. It will bring a new element of strategy. Next game opponent is picking, so everything is fair.

5. Time-handicapped tournaments. Sounds fun and interesting, I would like to try. It could be casual any time, if someone afraid to loose their rating.

6. Theme tournaments is planned, great news. Thanks. Can't wait to play them.

7. Team tournaments. Has been considered, but the Teams feature needs serious improvement first. Good luck then with team feature improvement. There is a big field in this area.

8. Last game counts. This idea also need a try.

An 'achievement' system is in developers plans, good to hear that.
I'd like there was also small trophy for top 10 if a number of participants is high (100+), as tournaments become harder and harder nowadays, achieving top 3 is really tough.

Daily variants tourneys are really needed. The reason is that variants are not very popular, and it is hard to start good tournament, with many strong players. If they will be officially sheduled - then players will know the right time to come and play their favorite variant.

And of course I like idea to have more different parameters when creating tournament, like rating control, etc. As well as ideas of chess marathon tournament or puzzle battle tournament.
I'd like a random time control feature, that gives everyone playing a random time, it could be anywhere from 0+1 to 5+1 depending on what the creator of the tournament specifies the time range to be.
What about series of tournaments, that are united in the League?
Rounds could be played once a week, for example.
High place in every of such tournament-rounds will give a player league points.
There could be also play-off, after certain amount of tournament-rounds finished, to avoid the winner be known too early.
Also League could be divided by divisions, with players rotated between them after each season (same way as football championships).
#16 great idea

Like a Grand Prix circuit. Gain "Championship points" depending on your finishing position in tournaments.
I'd like to propose an idea of new system of champion determination.

Seasonal Tournaments (Eliminator) of top rated 50 players (contenders) that are played every 3 months.

Best players in each category determine a challenger in a tournament between best rated 50 players. And then current champion defend his title in the match with the winner of that tournament.

Champions in each category are displayed during 3 months on the top of the list.

It will be simply more fair, and we will know who is really the strongest.
Cool necro, Kapsarov.

As for what you suggested, it's been thought about, but it's simply impossible to organise. That's just the nature of the internet.
Dear Hellball, good morning.

#18 Is a great idea! Everybody will love to see best playing with best, for a championship.

Why do you think that such tournaments will be impossible to organise?

Do you forget, that lichess is the best ever chess site, with the best developers, and they could easily accomplish even harder tasks?

Simple example - Marathon. It wasn't easy of course, and it needed few attempts to try, but now it is regular event on lichess.

And there are many such examples of such competitions on other sites also.

So, I think there's nothing impossible for such a great site like lichess.

Only problem that I can think of are different time zones, but this could be simply organized in 2 rounds with 12 hours between them, so players on all continents will be pleased.

Best regards,
