There have been multiple instances now when an anonymous player chooses to curse at me and type insults in the chat, but I cannot reply anything other than the five buttons that say Good Game, Well Played, etc.
How does that work? Why are some people able to chat as anonymous but others aren't? What criteria do you use to suggest whether someone can type in the chat?
How do you even play against anonymous? I thought they removed that

if your feelings get hurt easily the developers have designed a special setting for you

if your sense of forum's cleanliness got hurt, read what the OP had written and find out, that he doesn't complain about being insulted, but about inequity that some players can insult, while the other cannot fight back.
Exactly, I'm not complaining about the insult. I simply don't understand how some anonymous players can still chat after the developers supposedly disabled chat for all anonymous players. What's going on? Are these guys hacking lichess to bypass the limitation? Is the disabling of chat only a client-side effect where any random Joe can pop open the browser's developer tools and reverse it? If that's not it, are you giving a char privilege to certain users, maybe visitors from a certain country can still chat?
I occasionally play as anon when I am away from home. I have had anons chat to me and Idk how they can do it cause it is disabled for me. I have some feeling it is linked to mobile users or something like that. The real question is though how could they chat without it being enabled?

Anonymous players can chat when using the Lichess Android app.
With an Internet Browser it's not possible.
In my opinion it's either a bug or an illogical feature.
!Both! should be or not be able to chat...

If I remember correctly, anonymous chat was disabled because it was getting spammed with ads, not because there was a desire to disable it.
If someone spams, insults etc, you can still disable the chat window.
And with the Android app you can spam, insult as well.
So the current setting makes no sense at all anyway.
