Does playing chess make you smarter? Not really

yes i play a lot and i'm very smart (1300 ELO IRL lol)

btw i can't resolve the captcha
I dont know if playing chess makes u smarter, but it helps analysing al sort of things and planning things ahead.... :)
Smarter, not sure. Exercise for my brain, sure. Improved foresight on and off the board, sure.
You'd have to elaborate on what you mean by "smarter" and what being "smarter" is applied to, because it can mean a number of things. Smarter in the aspect of being strategic? Yes sure, maybe. Smarter as in how to handle a negotiation? Probably not. Chess plays the role of analyzing/problem solving, not everyday common sense. There's also a difference between intelligence and education. Ultimately, it boils down to the individual, whether they're mentally capable of benefiting or not.
Chess won't make you smarter, but since it drove me to alcohol and tobacco I'm sure to get better because Tal did both! ;}
